Beginning of My Social Work Journey
The journey in Social Work profession started several years ago when I decided to pursue Social Work studies at the University of Ghana. Upon completion of my BSW training, I had the opportunity to work at the Oncology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) providing services to clients and families affected by cancer. When a diagnosis of cancer was given, it often came with shock and disbelief. Clients and their families sometimes fell into a state of uncertainty that had an effect on their family life, employment, financial situation, and their emotional state. I worked with clients to assess their situation and the impact of the illness on their lives and on people around them.
In collaboration with case managers, staff members, physicians, and other healthcare team members, I provided an assessment of the appropriate level of care and services, and facilitated transition through the cancer care continuum, including diagnosis, treatment, end of life and survivorship.
