Where I Want to Go – The Future
May today there be peace within.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.”

Being inspired by the above questions from Mother Teresa, I hope to follow my passion in working with people affected by cancer. The diagnosis of cancer comes with uncertainties that have ripple effects on the individual and their families, employment, financial situation and their emotional states. I hope to work in evaluating client’s situation in order to understand the full impact of the illness on them and the people around.
Cancer is a life threatening illness that does not affect only the individual but his/her family and other social systems also. I envisage my future clinical practice to involve individuals, couples, families, groups, and organizations.
I also hope to employ Social Work values in my work with people, especially in working with cancer patients. I hope to focus more on client self-determination, inherent worth and dignity of each human life as enshrined in the Social Code of ethics. An attention will be given to client interacting systems and will strive to achieve social justice within my own scope of practice.
I am hoping to seek continual professional development and training in Clinical Oncology through workshops, in-service training programs and conferences. I will like to embark on awareness creation on cancer and the need to seek early treatment through presentations, radio talk shows and community engagements . I hope to also advocate for quality health care for people experiencing life threatening illnesses, like cancer, through report writing, recommendations and personal interactions.
I also hope to practice self-care that will help me to balance personal and professional work. I hope to include mindfulness and relaxation practices to my daily life.
